**AASL Designates September 28 Banned Websites Awareness Day**
In an extension of the observance of Banned Books Week, AASL will highlight censorship awareness by designating Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011, as Banned Websites Awareness Day. AASL hopes to bring attention to the overly aggressive filtering of educational and social websites used by students and educators. This new initiative formally directs national attention to a percolating conversation about the impact of Internet filtering on teaching and learning in K-12 education. For more information about Banned Websites Awareness Day resources and support materials, please visit AASL Essential Links.
**School Librarians and Educators Encouraged to Contribute to AASL Online Learning Tool**
A new online resource is now available to share quality lesson plans with peers across the country. AASL’s recently launched “Standards for the 21st Century Learner Lesson Plan Database,” is a public online database providing school librarians with a fast and friendly virtual resource to collaborate with their colleagues. Building on the template provided in “Standards for the 21st-Century Learner In Action,” the Lesson Plan Database is an interactive resource and tool to support school librarians and other educators in teaching the essential learning skills defined in the AASL learning standards. Submissions to the Lesson Plan Database are vetted by AASL reviewers to ensure lesson plans published are of the highest quality.
**School Department of Education Offers Resources for Recognizing Constitution Day and September 11**
September 17 is Constitution Day/Citizenship Day, commemorating the September 17, 1787, signing of the U.S. Constitution. In recognition, Congress has mandated that every educational institution receiving federal funds take a day to teach about the seminal document. As September 17 falls on a Saturday this year, institutions may celebrate either the preceding or the following week. To assist students and educators in their studies, free online resources are available for free from the U.S. Department of Education. A new Department website also compiles materials developed by federal agencies and grantees in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of September 11.

The Partnership for 21st Century Skills is a national organization that advocates for 21st century readiness for every student. As the United States continues to compete in a global economy that demands innovation, P21 and its members provide tools and resources to help the U.S. education system keep up by fusing the three Rs and four Cs (critical thinking and problem solving, communication, collaboration, and creativity and innovation). While leading districts and schools are already doing this, P21 advocates for local, state and federal policies that support this approach for every school.
